"Found in Translation" International Conference on Translation and Multiculturalism University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur
Jointly organized by the University of Malaya's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics and the Malaysian Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (MACLALS), the conference will be held at the University's sprawling green campus in Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysia¡¯s National Laureate Muhammad Haji Salleh will deliver the keynote address and speakers at other plenary sessions include P.P. Giridhar, head of India¡¯s National Translation Mission, Wolfgang Kubin, Professor of Sinology at Bonn University, and Anthony Pym, Professor of English Linguistics at the Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona, Spain. We invite you to submit abstracts for presentations in the following areas:
- The role played by translation in multilingual societies – historical as well as contemporary - Ideological stances in translation in relation to gender, politics, ethnicity - Analyses and critiques of translated texts - Translations of literary works and their influence across cultures - Translation theories and strategies - The place of translation in linguistic and cultural diaspora.
There will also be space set aside for presentations in the form of posters and workshops. In addition, there will be a programme of readings, discussions and film screenings in the evenings.
Presentations can be in English, Chinese, Malay or Malaysian Sign Language. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 15 January 2010.
